'Lantern' is a new landmark office building in Maidenhead town centre.

Lantern, Maidenhead

A fresh design approach for this site, at the corner of Sun Lane and Marlow Road on the edge of Maidenhead Town Centre, sees an outstanding and distinctive piece of architecture befitting of its gateway location. The simple elegance and materiality of the facade along with the pitched roof form provide an interesting, dynamic and distinctive building, responding to the context in a contemporary way.

Historic road patterns from days before the roundabout; visual connectivity to the town centre and acknowledgment of views to the park from neighbouring Listed buildings all combine to inspire the intelligent massing which grounds the building into its urban landscape. The pitched roof lowers towards the south to Hanson House and Thames House to the north.

Greater architectural interest has been crafted with angled profiles and recessed windows and from the open lattice of the Lantern, as it ushers to a pinnacle, with a corner entrance symbolised with enlarged open fenestration representative of the double-height entrance lobby inside.

This new-build 19,000sqft office was designed and fully co-ordinated with AutoCAD REVIT, and with the use of steel castellated beams - reducing the plans to just one column array: a grid influenced by the ground floor car parking layout - cranked sections help to form the faceted rear elevation set-backs, while large floor-to-ceiling windows fill the dual-aspect office floor plates with very good daylight (helping achieve Very Good BREEAM rating) and offering attractive views into the neighbouring tree canopies of the central roundabout and Kidwell's Park.

A stunning piece of architecture. We firmly believe that Lantern is the best building currently available in the Thames Valley. It gets extremely positive feedback constantly.

An elegant facade treatment expresses the functionality of the office plan with an understated and robust materials palette. Greater architectural interest is expressed through the angled profiles of the brickwork.
